Mixed hardwood beams out of barns — hand hewn, mortise and tenon, rough sawn. Squared from round logs with an axe long before anybody around here had a sawmill, and the scalloped axe marks are still all over the faces.

Pre-sanded and ready to install

This is the part people do not expect. Most reclaimed beams arrive filthy and you spend a weekend with a wire brush before you can do anything. Ours are already sanded — clean enough to oil and hang the day you bring them home.

Reading a real hand-hewn beam

The scallop marks from a broadaxe are irregular. They overlap, they vary in depth, and the pattern never repeats. Machine-distressed lumber has a rhythm to it that you can spot across a room once you know to look. These also carry mortise pockets, peg holes, and checking that runs with the grain — all evidence of a beam that actually held a building up.

What people build with them

Fireplace mantels first, by a wide margin. After that: faux exposed ceiling beams, floating shelves, bench tops, and headers over openings. The 9×10 pieces are heavy enough to want help and a good bracket.

What does hand-hewn mean?

The beam was squared from a round log with an axe and a broadaxe rather than sawn at a mill. The result is a slightly irregular face covered in shallow scalloped axe marks — the signature look people want in a reclaimed beam.

Are the beams ready to install?

Yes. These are pre-sanded, so they are clean enough to handle and finish without you doing the dirty work first. Most people oil them and hang them.

How do I tell a real hand-hewn beam from a fake one?
