Reclaimed Colorado Douglas fir out of commercial building sites. Twelve feet long, twelve inches wide, three inches thick — an unusually useful dimension.
$216 per beam, or $18 per linear foot.
The dimension is the point
Twelve inches wide and three inches thick is exactly right for shelving that does not sag and stair treads that feel solid underfoot. You are not laminating anything and you are not adding a center bracket. One board, one shelf.
Character
These have great bug holes — small tunnels left by wood-boring insects before the timber was ever milled. In three-inch stock they are cosmetic and they read as character. Combined with the fir’s amber color, it makes a shelf that looks like it has been there longer than the house.

FIG. 011.QQuestions
Douglas Fir Beams — common questions
How much are reclaimed Douglas fir beams in Denver?
These Colorado Douglas fir beams are $216 per beam, or $18 per linear foot. Each beam is 144 inches long, 12 inches wide and 3 inches thick.
What are bug holes and do they weaken the wood?
Bug holes are small tunnels left by wood-boring insects long before the timber was milled. In a 3-inch-thick beam they are cosmetic — they read as character and do not affect the strength of a shelf or a tread.
What is a good use for a 12in x 3in fir beam?
Shelving and stair treads, mostly. The 12-inch width is a generous shelf and the 3-inch thickness means it spans without a sag or a center bracket.
