These Douglas fir and white pine timbers were used to transport wind turbines for Vestas out of Brighton. Once the turbine gets where it is going, the cribbing is surplus — which means this is structurally sound softwood that has barely been used.
10.5ft × 6in × 8in — $140 each. 50in × 6in × 8in — $70 each.
Why this is the cheap way into a beam
If you want the look of a heavy timber and you do not need a hundred years of patina, this is the least expensive 6×8 in the yard. Clean, straight, and sound.
What people build with them
Fireplace mantels, faux exposed beams, building and framing, raised beds, timber steps, and landscape edging. The 50-inch pieces are almost exactly mantel length as they sit.

FIG. 033.QQuestions
Wind Turbine Transport Beams — common questions
What are wind turbine transport beams?
They are heavy timbers used to crib and brace wind turbine components in transit — in this case for Vestas out of Brighton, Colorado. Once the turbine is delivered the timbers are surplus. They are structurally sound and barely used.
How much do they cost?
The 10.5ft beams are $140 each and the 50in beams are $70 each. Both are 6 inches by 8 inches.
Are these good for outdoor landscaping?
Yes. At 6x8 they work well for raised beds, retaining edges, timber steps, and parking curbs. They are untreated, so for ground contact expect a normal service life for softwood.
