Gorgeously distressed and extremely hard to find. We love when we get these in stock.
These boards got their silver patina hauling steel tubing across the US plains — years of sun, wind, and grit working on hard oak until the surface went a weathered silver-gray that no stain reproduces.
Two sizes
Silver patina shelving boards — 7 to 8.5in wide, 2in thick, 13ft long. $12 per board foot.
Thick transit boards — 7in × 3in × 115in. $150 each, or $15 per linear foot.
Do not sand the silver off
The patina is a thin surface layer. It will disappear under a belt sander in about four seconds. If the silver is what you are buying, clean it with a brush, knock down anything sharp by hand, and finish with a clear oil or a matte poly.
What people build with them
Shelving, tabletops, benches, countertops. The 13-foot shelving boards make a full-wall run with no seam, which is the reason people drive across town for them.

FIG. 026.QQuestions
Hard Oak Transit Boards — common questions
What are hard oak transit boards?
They are the heavy oak boards used to support and separate steel tubing on freight moving across the US plains. Years of sun, wind, and grit give the oak a distinctive silver-gray patina you cannot reproduce with stain.
How much do they cost?
Silver patina shelving boards are $12 per board foot. The thicker 7in x 3in x 115in transit boards are $150 each, or $15 per linear foot.
What is the silver patina and will it sand off?
It is a thin weathered surface layer created by UV and abrasion. It will sand off — so if the silver is what you want, clean it gently and finish with a clear oil rather than sanding it back.
When it's gone, it's gone.
